Home and Away: Migrant and Refugee Resettlement in the UK

Part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science 2015

Having arrived in the UK, how does a person become part of the community? How does the community become home?

You are invited to an afternoon of presentations and discussion for social workers, lawyers, academics, teachers, health workers, refugees and members of the public interested in refugee and migrant resettlement in the UK.

Speakers include:

  • Dr Mike Collyer (University of Sussex) carrying out ESRC-funded research on resettlement of refugees who arrive through the Gateway programme. The research is unusual both for its focus on people who arrived more than five years ago and for its examination of measures including language and cultural knowledge, well-being and perceived social acceptance;
  • Jo Wilding (University of Brighton), presenting findings of research on the experiences and best interests of unaccompanied child refugees and asylum seekers in the UK;

Practitioners from NGOs and the voluntary sector, TBC.

The event will provide an opportunity for practitioners, academics, community groups and policy-makers to exchange ideas and experiences to improve reception and resettlement of refugees, particularly unaccompanied children and those resettled from refugee camps abroad.
