Election Debate on Housing in Brighton & Hove
There is a housing crisis in Brighton & Hove:
Private rents are too high;
House prices are soaring;
There isn’t enough council housing;
More and more people are homeless
Feel strongly about this? Then come to the election debate on housing organised by Brighton & Hove Living Rent Campaign.
Election candidates:
Caroline Lucas (Green Party)
Paul Chandler (Liberal Democrats Party)
Clarence Mitchell (Conservative Party)
Keven Smith (UKIP)
Labour Party candidate has not yet confirmed.
In 1988/9 the Government decided that housing would work with a less regulated market. They abolished fair rents and secure tenancies, sold off council housing and ended councils’ duty to provide housing.
It has been a disaster. Greater security and rent controls work in other countries. The Living rent campaign says we need to go back to fair rents based on affordability.
The Living Rent Campaign wants:
Fair rents (rent controls)
Build new council homes at living rents
More secure private sector tenancies
Registration of all private landlords
End to discrimination against private tenants on benefits
An end to the sale of council houses
