This action-packed labour history course will cover the industrial revolution to the present day.
Over 6 Tuesday evenings, we will discuss: Empire, including slavery; the rise of socialism in its many forms; the rise of trade unions, including the new union movement, with an emphasis on the workers from many lands.
The course will also cover the women’s movement, suffragettes, the formation of the Labour Party, the Great Depression, the two world wars and the Cold War, the rise and fall of the welfare state, the fight against prejudice and the move to monetarism.
There will be ample time for discussion and notes on all subjects will be distributed for free to all attending.
Facilitator Terry McCarthy is the former director of the National Museum of Labour history
he has written several books, and has taught both young people and adults
over many years. Terry is an active trade unionist and campaigner and worked as a labourer in the old evening Argus works on Robert Street before going on to further education.
