The Earth as a Freudian Spaceship
With Matt Lee
10-week module Mondays 7-9pm from 24 May to 26th July
In this exploratory module we will examine the contemporary situation of crisis, extinction and violence through concepts of desire, drive and symptom. Drawing on material developed whilst co-writing a book with the psychoanalyst Eric Harper, I will look at the work of Freud and Fanon through a’schizo-analytic’ perspective.
The sessions will aim to introduce concepts – such as Fanon’s ‘sociogeny’ – and examine how they work in terms of our encounters with contemporary life. We will explore the realities of violent coexistence that mark the “natural /human / inhuman” distinctions, attend to our emotional and ‘affective’ responses to the world around and within us and think through the notion of ‘knowing what to do’.
Reading will be in the form of short extracts from various texts.
