Suitable for beginners.
This short course explores the subversive and transformative potential of music. We will discuss the subversive power of Billie Holiday’s music in terms of the “aesthetic dimension” theorised by Angela Davis and Herbert Marcuse. We will read lyrics by Ms. Lauryn Hill through the lens of W.E.B. Du Bois’ theory of “double consciousness”. And we will discuss the commodification of music and cultural appropriation.
