Part of FUB’s mission is to build an alternative educational practice. We’re not just here to replicate for free what traditional Universities do, we want to make something better, something that can break free of the restrictions and bad practices that have spread within mainstream education. Many of us know that the experience of education, in general, is terrible for many of us, often made worse if we’re working class, if we’re black, if we’re a woman, if we’re disabled. Those of us who are educators – teachers, lecturers, tutors – often find ourselves fighting an uphill battle to try and teach subjects we love because of the way the institutions are structured and because of the restrictions placed on our work. FUB is about experimenting with new practices, finding new ways through the bad habits and institutions that exist. Those of us who are students – whether in higher education, adult education or in mainstream schooling – know that we’re often forced into stupid tests and judged negatively for who we are. We all know that another way must be possible, we all feel this when we experience those brief, fleeting moments of positive learning within this messed up educational system.
As part of our ongoing work to develop an alternative educational community FUB is hosting two workshops in December which we encourage everyone interested in education to attend. How can we make changes to our education? How can we develop new ways of learning, teaching and educating?
The first workshop looks at the idea of decolonising education. FUB is co-hosting this with BRIDGES, a project that has developed a set of tools for how to begin to understand and change educational practice. This will be held on Friday 10th December at the Brighthelm Centre, from 6pm – 8pm. We will be providing free food at the event so don’t worry if you have to miss dinner time, we’ll have you covered. Sign up on our events page here if you can, so we know how many are coming along and how many to cater for. Share the details, and share some of the graphics we’ve made below on social media (right click and download the image and then share on your Facebook/Twitter/TikTok/Insta).
The second workshop looks at the campaign to make changes to the East Brighton communities such as Whitehawk. Predominantly working-class communities, they have been isolated and left behind by the local educational system, resulting in one of the worst levels of educational achievement in the country. FUB will be hosting an organiser from the Class Divide campaign who will talk about their aims and activities and explaining the problem and what they aim to do to change the situation. This is a great way to get involved in their work or just to have your eyes opened about the real levels of systematic failure within our local educational setting. This workshop will be on Thursday December 16th from 6.30pm -8pm at The Crew Club in Whitehawk. The events page with all the details is here. Again, there’s a graphic below, please share details on social media and with your friends generally and come along yourself!
