This seminar will draw on a strand of findings that emerged from a recently completed study commissioned by the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England as part of an enquiry into school exclusions that set out to explore how inequalities in rates of recorded exclusion might be reduced.
It will focus on characteristics of good practice identified across six secondary schools, including (i) a strong sense of responsibility and community, (ii) positive whole-school approaches to behaviour management, (iii) resourcefulness and flexibility in provision, and
(iv) a commitment to empowering young people and promoting respectful relationships.
Interestingly, similar characteristics were identified by tutors working in
Intial Teacher Education when asked to explore the general characteristics of schools doing well in relation to inclusion, diversity and equity.
