Art, Refuge and Resistance – ‘The Syrian War: The Eye of an Artist’

This exhibition: ‘The Syrian War: The Eye of an Artist’ by Wissam Al Jaziary will be shown at the Café Gallery in Grand Parade between 22nd October and 17th November as part of Black History Month.

The exhibition intends to raise questions about the role of art both in and as acts of refuge and resistance and will feature a series of art works, films and theatre pieces associated with Brighton’s academic and migrant community.

The exhibition be launched with an open forum event from 1.30 – 6.00 on 23rd October 2015, also at the Grand Parade campus,  and will look at the role of art in refuge and resistance. It will be followed by an evening performance from a Palestinian theatre maker and activist, at 6.00 pm, with entrance to this by donation.

The exhibition and launch event are free and open to all members of the university and the local community,  and hope to bring together diverse voices to increase our understanding of the role art can play in making visible experiences of conflict and resistance.

The exhibition has been organised by the Community University Partnership Programme with the Conflict Cluster at the University of Brighton and the City of Sanctuary.
