The end of the Cold War was widely hailed as a triumph of liberalism and an opportunity to remake the world in a liberal image. To this end, liberal foreign policies during the 1990s actively pursued the promotion of democracy, humanitarian intervention, liberal peacebuilding and the liberalization of the world economy. And yet, barely a decade later, such policies were either abandoned or expectations radically curtailed. Talk about a liberal world order has all but disappeared. In this lecture, Professor Jahn will explore the reasons for the latest rise and fall of liberal foreign policies with reference to classical liberal theory and its fragmentation.

The speaker is Beate Jahn, Professor of International Relations, School of Global Studies.
