17:30 until 18:30
Language Learning Centre, Arts A
Speaker: Chris McDermott
Part of the series: SCLS Language and Culture Series

With apologies to Sun Tzu (Art of War) we will be exploring the art of doing conflict – interpersonally and intra-personally – supported by a diverse range of representations of conflict in art from Renaissance to modern graffiti. When the latter is harnessed to community ends it becomes an example of how the language of alienation can be turned into a language of hope and creative energy. The art of conflict involves facing it full on and harnessing its creative energy as a means of transforming our relationships and ourselves.

Chris McDermott is a priest, mediator and trainer with a professional background in conflict resolution and communication skills. Although he has lived in Zimbabwe, South Africa and the USA, he has spent most of his working life in a multi-faith environment in east London. From 2000 until 2012 he was Education Team Leader at Conflict and Change, a community development charity in the London borough of Newham.

Wine will be served from 17.00. All welcome.
