Pledge to Save The NHS
David Cameron promised, “The NHS is safe in our hands” But, once in office, his Government passed legislation to privatise
the NHS in England. It brought in the Health and Social Care Act 2012 and set about making £40bn cuts.
As a result the NHS is facing its most serious crisis since its creation in 1948:
• The Secretary of State no longer has a responsibility to provide a comprehensive health service
• 70% of health contracts are now awarded to private, for profit companies
• Public hospitals must plan for 49% of their income to come from private patients (reducing beds available for those who can’t afford private healthcare)
• An estimated £3bn has been spent on reorganisation
• Nursing and health workers’ jobs have been cut and a further 8000 beds lost
In response, Sussex Defend the NHS, along with Brighton Keep Our NHS Public, has devised the Pledge to Save the NHS. They are asking local parliamentary
and council candidates to endorse it and show us before next year’s elections how they plan to address its demands.
