Making sense of text
We are witnessing unprecedented levels of hype around the ability of computers to understand natural language text. To convey a sense of the real challenges that arise, Professor David Weir will describe two aspects of the work that he and his colleagues in the Text Analysis Group and the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media are undertaking. First, he will present a model that takes the meaning of individual words and produces a representation of their meaning in the context of other words. Second, he will discuss the development and use of automated tools that support the analysis of large textual data sets by social scientists and researchers in a variety of different organisations.
