The Government claims that its Academies and Free Schools programme will “give schools the freedoms and flexibilities they need to continue to drive up standards”. Its says it aims to “raise standards for all children, narrow the attainment gap between the most and least advantaged, and create a “world-beating system”.
Critics say the system is based on ‘ersatz elitism’, will lead to increased social segregation, leave maintained schools struggling, delivers at best mixed results, and misdirects much needed funding to profit-making education chains.
Who is right? What is the real effect on academic standards and social mobility?
