This short film is the result of a parent-led participatory video project facilitated by the University of Brighton to train a small group of parent carers of children with additional needs in film making techniques, whilst discussing and supporting each other through their common, yet varied, experiences of caring for a child with additional needs. This approach allows the participants to decide the subject matter for their film. The parent carers were supported in the process by Amaze, a Brighton-based charity that supports the parents and carers of children with additional needs. After initial sessions, we decided to make a film about the experiences of many parents with the various professionals that they come into contact with, and how these might be changed.

In our film we express some disappointment with the way some professionals have worked with our families over time but also reflect on those who have really made a positive difference. We hope to use the completed film to promote awareness among professionals and trainee professionals of the importance of listening to the views of parent carer views. This seminar is to launch the film and discuss both the process of participatory video as a means through which to bring about service change as well as to reflect on the film itself.

This is a free event and all are welcome, refreshments will be provided.
