Edwardian Picture Postcards: a talk by Dr Annebella Pollen

Inscriptions on postcards have often been overlooked in academic writing, their messages considered to hold little meaning, but Dr Annebella Pollen’s research suggests otherwise. From looking at a selection of Edwardian postcards from Brighton held here at The Keep, she argues that the postcard was used to incite romance and was used as a flirtatious means of communication.

These messages were coded and euphemistic, allowing private and intimate exchanges of affection to be communicated across a public medium. In this talk, Dr Annebella Pollen will discuss the importance of these Edwardian picture postcards as a vehicle of romance through their secret messages.

Dr Annebella Pollen is Senior Lecturer in the History of Art and Design at the University of Brighton. She was a researcher for The Rules of Attraction project for the Brighton and Hove Royal Pavilion Libraries and Museums, to uncover hidden messages of romance and love in the local collections.

Talks are free, but booking is essential.
