Consuming Scandinavian Crime Fiction
Speaker: Jakob Stougaard-Nielsen (UCL)
3.30pm-4.30pm, E424 Checkland, Falmer
This talk will focus on the ways in which Scandinavian crime fiction has thematically negotiated the relationship between the welfare state and consumerism, and how, conversely, contemporary crime fiction is uncomfortably positioned as an object of mass-consumption, offering little more than escapism and a promise of momentary fulfilment, and a genre critically attuned to the socio-economic inequalities of the modern welfare society.
