Brighton in the 1920s and 1930s

Brighton during the interwar years was an exciting and rapidly changing town. This talk will explore such delights as the subterranean ballroom and night club in the King’s Road Arches, dancing at Sherry’s and the Regent, the wonders of the new Aquarium and the open-air freshness of the Black Rock lido.

Brighton’s townscape was also changing dramatically. The north side of Western Road was rebuilt and new stores for Boots, C & A and Stafford’s were opened while visitors to West Street saw an almost complete transformation with the building of the swimming baths, SS Brighton, (later the ice rink) the Odeon cinema and Montague Burton’s, ‘the tailors of taste!’

The talk by local historian Paul Jordan will be illustrated with images of Brighton and adverts taken from the local newspapers of the time.

The talk is free but places are limited so booking essential.
