Drama and Theatre as a Community Research Method to explore sexuality
This workshop in Brighton runs as part of a wider programme of workshops in Malawi , Uganda and India as part of the Institute for Development Studies’ ‘Sexuality and Development Programme’ under the project ‘Empowerment and participation – linking local realities to global action’. The workshops are investigating the potential of drama and theatre as a research tool for communities to explore their experiences around sexuality.
Sexuality can be difficult to articulate in traditional research/policy settings especially in contexts where certain identities and behaviours are illegal or not accepted. The workshops look at the possibilities of drama as a way for communities to begin to share experiences and make their voices heard on a national and global platform.
The workshop will be delivered by Effie Makepeace, Community Theatre Practitioner with 8 years experience in the UK and in Malawi working with marginalised communities, with a particular focus on gender and sexuality, HIV and men having sex with men in prison.
We are inviting anyone interested in these areas to come along on Sunday 14th September to The Marlborough Theatre in Brighton . The workshop runs from 11am – 5pm latest with lunch provided. No experience at all necessary the workshop will be informal, friendly and shaped by interests of participants.
