Armchair Critics
Armchair critics is Fabrica’s regular forum for discussion and debate, led by artist Lorenza Ippolito.
Monika Grzymala’s spatial drawings have been likened to psychologically charged landscapes. Between 1890 and 1960 much of the music produced in Britain responded to and evoked our relationship with landscape. Elgar’s love of the Malverns and Britten’s identification with the Suffolk coast is well documented, but what inspired them to write about these places? It’s clear that music has a powerful effect on our emotions but are specific chord structures, melodic lines and rhythms able to imply particular locations or experiences to us? And how are our feelings about, and our image of landscape shaped by these composers?
Join Lorenza Ippolito and composer Robert Carrington to talk about the intimate relationship between nature and music in the work of British composers of the 20th Century.
