People often criticise the way society is, but that leads to the question ‘what’s the alternative?’. This module will introduce the idea of critical and public sociology, and discuss its limits and possibilities for making public interventions, or shaping alternative social and political futures. It will go on to to explore alternatives to current types of society. We will focus this term on 1) communism and socialism; 2) green society; and 3) alternative education. Other alternatives we may touch on or come back to next year could include utopianism, alternative economies and co-ops, counter-cultures such as food counter-culture and urban social centres, societies with less work and global society without borders. Are societies that are alternatives to ours desirable and viable?
