Woman Up!

Join Brighton Women’s Centre and leading campaigners to celebrate women and their achievements whilst also addressing the issues that affect women, their rights and equality in society today.  Woman Up! is a free day of debates, panel discussions and performances with subjects including: body image, honour based violence, forced marriage, motherhood, creative activism and much more.

Caroline Lucas will be one of many speakers participating in the event.

Panel Discussion One – Gender-based Violence

With Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne; Lucy-Anne Holmes, award winning author and founder of the No More Page 3 campaign; Ruth Norman Mason from local domestic abuse charity and refuge Rise UK; June Eric-Udorie, anti-female genital mutilation campaigner and Jean Calder, Director of For Our Daughters.

Panel Discussion Two – Creative and Meaningful Activism

With Lilinaz Evans, a young feminist organiser for Twitter Youth Feminist Army, Jo Harrison, a community artist, feminist blogger and an activist with AnyBody UK and Yas Nescati, recently named the Observer Rising Star of 2015 for her work to further gender equality, who is a writer and feminist activist working on multiple campaigns including the Campaign 4 Consent.

Brighton based activist and organiser Carmel Offord commented, “Woman Up! is a phenomenon that is going to spread like wildfire across the country, and it seems only right that Brighton gets to see a piece of the action. Like the founders of Women Up!, I would like this event to reach a whole new audience and empower them to take action to make equal rights a reality. As campaigners, we have achieved a number of successes recently and we want people to realise that we can make
positive change if we work together. We are over the moon that so many performers and speakers are giving so generously of their time to make it a free, accessible event for everyone to attend.”

Woman Up! Brighton is set to be a colourful and challenging look at what it means to be a woman in the 21st century. The event is ticketed but free. The organisers welcome donations to help cover the costs.
