A few times a year – we don’t know exactly how often – 52 people meet in a room in London. We think they meet in the Guildhall. The people who attend these meetings represent organisations around the world. We can be sure that they are very well paid for they are the world’s financiers.
While most ordinary people know nothing about these meetings, the British government is fully up to speed, in fact its representatives sit in on these meetings, as observers. That’s right, the government sits in on meetings in which the world’s financiers determine what strategy they want for regulations that affect them!!
A big issue for regulations this year is the proposed EU-US trade agreement, formally known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Critics say it would increase corporate power and make it more difficult for governments to regulate markets for public benefit.
In this talk, Tom Lines, a consultant specialising international trade and agricultural markets, will decipher the finance lobby and expose some secrets we really should know but don’t because those who control the markets prefer us not to.
Followed by a special screening of the award winning Secret City, a brilliant and shocking film about the City of London, the Corporation that runs it, and its role in the economic crisis. (see trailer here)
“There is an institution with a murky history and remarkable powers that acts like a political and financial island within our island nation state. Welcome to the Square Mile and the City of London Corporation”. The New Statesman, 2011
Speaker Tom Lines and Film-maker, Lee Salter will be available for Q&A and a discussion following the talk and film.
