No to modern football

A talk by Mark Doidge, University of Brighton

An outcome of the Hillsborough tragedy was the Taylor Report that imposed new stadiums on football clubs. This occurred in parallel to a more commercial approach from clubs, the Premier League and the Champions League.

Many fans have rebelled against these changes under the banner of ‘No to Modern Football’ and this talk will account for this movement, in the context of the global economic transformation of football. It will also highlight how this is finding local expression at Whitehawk and Lewes (and other Sussex clubs).

This talk is part of Brains at the Bevy: A series of short and enlightening talks from local academics.

Free, all welcome!

Talks start at 6pm and will last for an hour, including lots of time for questions and discussion.  Tea and coffee will be provided during the talk and all are welcome to stay on afterwards to enjoy the lovely food and drink available at the Bevy.

These talks are organised by the Bevy and Community University Partnership Programme at the University of Brighton and funded by the Sussex Learning Network.
