Inroads into the Yoga Sutras

With Louise Jolly

11am – 12pm over 4 Saturdays (14 & 21 October, 4 & 11 November 2017)

At the Vallance Community Centre, Unit 2 Conway Court, Sackville Road, Hove BN3 3RW

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is the founding text of yoga philosophy. If you’re interested in yoga, meditation or simply in philosophical inquiry into reality and mind, come along to discuss what we can find in this work.

Over the four sessions we will look at what the Yoga Sutras tell us about:

  • dualism, and how this is different from other Indian and Western models
  • the nature of mind
  • how we can know things for sure
  • the place of God in yoga
  • suffering, what drives it and how to avoid it
  • magical powers – are they natural or supernatural?

Big questions – so if they are the kind of thing you like to ponder of a Saturday morning in Hove, please join our group. Along the way you will be able to learn some of the key Sanskrit philosophical vocabulary and even do some chanting.

The course will be facilitated by Louise Jolly, who has practised yoga for 17 years. She has encountered the Yoga Sutras with Hilary MacRae in Brighton, with Dr MA Jayashree and Dr HV Nagaraja Rao in India, and via remote courses and summer schools run by the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies.
