This course is part of a Government funded project called Self Health – a national research project designed to measure the impact of adult education courses on mental health and wellbeing. It is for anyone with mild to moderate mental health issues.

This course offers an opportunity to explore poetry through sequential art. Comic art is a vibrant form of visual storytelling that can be both playful and emotive.

Using comic art we will reimagine poetry, translating its words and rhythm through visual metaphor, colour and lyrical line. We will begin the course with reading and translating the work of known poets and end with learners writing and drawing their own comic poetry.

This course invites free creative expression, drawing skills are welcome but not necessary.

Who Can Attend?

The Self Health project is open to anyone aged 19 or over who has mild to moderate mental health challenges such as finding it hard to go out, not sleeping, worrying, feeling stressed, anxious, sad or low. You will be asked to complete a self-assessment of your mental health to see if you meet the criteria to be involved in the project. People can only attend one Self Health course so that as many people as possible can take part in the research project and provide us with their data. If you have already completed a Self Health course between September 2015 and April 2017 you will not be able to attend another long course but you can attend a Workshop for Returning Learners
